As the 2023 general election gathers momentum, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has called on Nigerians to reject inducements to sway their votes through vote buying .
He further urged them to support the efforts of the commission to stop the negative use of money in the nations electoral process by reporting cases of inducements to relevant agencies.
Prof Yakubu stated this at the Stakeholders Summit on Addressing the Influence of Money on the 2023 General Elections in Abuja. The INEC chairman who spoke on the negative implication of money in politics, said it destroys the very basics of democratic elections.
Furthermore, Prof Yakubu noted that INEC alone cannot deal with the situation, hence the collaboration with the police, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant agencies to change the narrative and restore sanity in the nations elections.
As expected, the event attracted stakeholders who took turns to reel out measures to put in place in curbing money politics in Nigeria elections.
The commission once again reassure Nigerians of their determination to ensure a solid election management system and a legacy of credible elections in Nigeria
