The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns over the Dangers of Bleaching Creams and its adverse effects on the health of many users.
The Regulatory Agency is therefore assuring Nigerians that it is set to start enforcement on people who engaged in formulating dangerous unauthorized chemicals in cosmetics products.
At a one day Media Sensitization workshop organised by the Agency for the Association of Nigerian Health Journalists in Abuja, the Ag Director General, NAFDAC, Monica Eimunjeze, indicated that the workshop is for the agency to collaborate with health journalists to enable them know the issues around bleaching creams and regulatory control In a paper presentation on an overview of skin bleaching; the NAFDAC perspective, Anto Ebele said there is no health benefit on skin bleaching, noting that results aren’t guaranteed and there’s evidence that skin lightening can result in serious side effects and complications.
Other highlights of the workshop are role of mass media in promoting public health and the NAFDAC’s regulatory control of cosmetics in Nigeria.
The agency further stated that the skin bleaching products that users purchase online and overseas do not have safety guarantee, warning that In some cases, ingredients aren’t listed on the package.
