The Barbaric practice of infanticide which connotes killing of newborn twins, triplets and albinos being carried out in some communities in the Federal Capital Territory due to fetish believes, illiteracy among others has been a matter of concern among some organizations.

In a bid to change the narrative, the European Union in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria and the Vine Heritage Home implemented the mobilizing Actions Towards Abolition of Infanticide (MATAI) Project which is focused on establishing mechanism to safeguard unborn babies and infants susceptible to being victims of infanticide.

Speaking at a facility tour at the Vine Heritage Home, a centre established to save the lives of innocent children who are subjected to such believes in the FCT, the Social Mobilization Manager, ActionAid Nigeria, Adewole Adedutun called on the Federal Governments and all relevant stakeholders to be more proactive in eradicating infanticide among other barbaric practices in the country.

Adeduntan who stated that urgent intervention is needed for communities who practice such believes noted that infanticide is also caused by high maternal mortality rates due to poor access to health services.

In his remarks the Founder, Vine Heritage Home, Stephen Olushola who stated how the Home came into existence noted that it is imperative to sensitize the people in such communities who believe that such kids are evil.

So far, over 170 children have been rescued by the Vine Heritage Home from 69 communities that practice such traditional belief in the FCT.
