A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting at Maitama in Abuja has fixed July 28 for ruling on the bail application filed by the former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.

When the matter was called on Wednesday, Idris’s counsel Chris Uche urged the trial judge Justice Adeyemi Ajayi to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms pending his trial. Other defendants in the matter also through their counsel sought for bail, arguing that the alleged crime is a bailable offence.

However, prosecution Counsel, Rotimi Jacob strongly opposed the application for bail urging the judge to consider the nature or the gravity of the charges against the defendants. After listening to both defence and prosecution counsel, Justice Ajayi adjourned till July 28 for ruling on the bail applications.

The former AGF and his fellow defendants – Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC on alleged diversion of public funds to the tune of over 109 billion naira.
