CBN’s Massive Stride On Nigeria’s Education Sector, The Emefiele Revolution

Over the years, the Nigerian’s education sector has witnessed significant setback.

This development could be attributed to neglect of this critical sector by successive governments.

Statistics revealed that Nigeria’s Universities that were ranked among top ivory towers from the mid 1960s to late 1980s are not among the top one thousand universities in the world.

To change this ugly narrative, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) adopted a radical approach under the leadership of Governor, Godwin Emefiele to correct the anomaly.

The apex bank adopted different initiatives to place the nation’s tertiary institutions among the top hundred tertiary institutions in the world.

One of the initiatives is the sixty three billion naira Central Bank of Nigeria’s “Centres of Excellence” project in nine Federal Government owned universities across the country to enhance post-graduate studies in financial related courses.

The other is the Tertiary Institutions Entrepreneurship Scheme aimed at training and financing entrepreneurship ideas of Nigerian university graduates.

A cross section of Nigerians who spoke to Channel Network Afrique, CNA, expressed satisfaction on the apex bank’s interventions in the education sector of the nation’s economy.

Between 2010 and 2020, Nigeria’s educational sector has suffered massive capital flight to the tune of about $28.65 billion on foreign education leading to high demand for dollars which has affected the nation’s foreign reserve by putting pressure on the exchange rate.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele through the Monetary Policy Committee, set up measures to save the country from this embarrassing situation.

It is expected that this huge investment in the Nigeria’s education sector by the Governor, Godwin Emefiele led Central Bank of Nigeria soon achieve the desired result of placing Nigeria’s Universities among the high ranking universities in the world.
