2027: NOA Urges Nigerians to Reject Hate Speech, Violence
As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to reject hate speech, violence and divisive politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling for greater commitment to national unity and development.
The Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call in his Independence Day message, urging citizens to respect political differences, promote issue-based engagement and resolve disagreements through lawful and democratic means.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Communication and Media, Paul Odenyi, Issa-Onilu said political competition must not be allowed to undermine the bonds that unite Nigerians.
He called on citizens to protect the peace and unity of the country before, during and after the 2027 elections, while upholding the rule of law and respecting divergent views.
Issa-Onilu also urged Nigerians to recognise the progress recorded since independence while remaining committed to addressing areas requiring further improvement.
“We must continue to hold on to the gains of our independence by taking responsibility for the Nigeria we want. The progress of our country depends not only on what the government does, but also on what each of us contributes as citizens,” he said.
The NOA boss said government alone could not build the Nigeria citizens desire, stressing the need for increased public participation, cooperation and responsible citizenship.
He described Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule as a defining milestone that gave Nigerians the opportunity to determine their own destiny and shape the country’s future.
Beyond the anniversary, Issa-Onilu called for increased productivity, self-reliance, peaceful coexistence and respect for national values, urging citizens to make positive contributions to their communities and the wider society.
He further reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to promoting patriotism, national unity and responsible citizenship, as well as providing citizens with accurate information on government policies and programmes and encouraging constructive participation in national development.
