The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Aisha Garba, has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the recent fire incident at LGEA Primary School, Ater, in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, which reportedly left several pupils injured.

Seven pupils were injured following an explosion that occurred at the school, sparking widespread concern over the safety of school environments.

In a statement personally signed and released to journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Dr. Garba extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected pupils, their families, the school community, and the Government and people of Benue State.

“The safety and well-being of our children remain our utmost priority, and we stand in solidarity with all those directly impacted,” she stated on behalf of the entire staff and management of the Commission.

Dr. Garba noted that UBEC is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant communication with the Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, and the Honourable Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Margaret Adamu. Both officials have already visited the school and the injured pupils currently receiving treatment at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Zaki-Biam.

She further commended their prompt intervention, which ensured that all affected pupils are receiving comprehensive medical care, with all medical expenses covered. Additionally, a full assessment of the damage to school facilities is currently underway.

“We commend the swift response of the Government of Benue State under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, as well as the efforts of state authorities, emergency services, and caregivers who have been on the ground to manage the situation,” she said.

Dr. Garba reaffirmed UBEC’s commitment to working closely with the Benue State Government to provide the necessary support that will enable a safe and timely resumption of learning activities at the affected school.

She also emphasized the importance of proactive safety measures in schools nationwide:

“While investigations into the root cause of the fire are ongoing, the Commission urges all school administrators to strengthen safety protocols and enforce strict adherence to preventive measures to avert such tragic incidents in the future.”

UBEC, she added, remains united in prayers for the swift and full recovery of the injured pupils and extends continued support to their families during this challenging time.
