The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Republic of Türkiye have moved to consolidate the gains of the recent presidential state visit to Ankara, following a high-level diplomatic meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, hosted the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, to discuss follow-up mechanisms for the strategic decisions reached by both nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Ambassador Poroy expressed appreciation for the seamless coordination provided by the Nigerian government during the President’s visit. He emphasized that the state visit has successfully elevated the relationship between both countries to that of strategic partners, noting that Türkiye is now focused on the swift implementation of agreed-upon objectives.

In response, Ambassador Tuggar described the visit as “historic,” signaling the start of a “new chapter” in bilateral relations. He highlighted the signing of nine landmark agreements during the Ankara summit, which are expected to yield significant socio-economic benefits for both nations.

Key Areas of Cooperation

A major highlight of the discussion was the push for enhanced diplomatic training and institutional exchange. Minister Tuggar called for a robust partnership between:

  • The Nigerian Foreign Service Academy (Ijanikin, Lagos)
  • The Turkish Diplomatic Institute

Next Steps and Monitoring

To ensure the agreements translate into tangible results, both officials agreed to establish clear communication channels and follow-up frameworks.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to hold a Political Consultative Meeting later this year. This upcoming forum will serve as a platform to monitor progress and refine strategies for achieving the targeted outcomes of the bilateral partnership.
