Tinubu’s Executive Order: NCC Vows To Protect Telecom Infrastructure
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting telecom infrastructure following President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order, which criminalizes damage or tampering with critical national infrastructure, including telecom facilities.
The NCC is working to operationalize the Executive Order to address the rising incidents of vandalism, theft, and obstruction at telecom sites that are negatively impacting network service quality across Nigeria.
Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, stated this during a courtesy visit by the executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council to the NCC headquarters in Abuja. She represented the NCC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida.
The NCC is concerned about the destruction of telecom assets and its impact on service delivery.
The Commission is working with stakeholders to address the challenges affecting telecom operations, including vandalism, theft, site access denial, and road construction-related damages.
The Executive Order, signed by President Tinubu on June 24, 2024, designates telecom infrastructure as “critical national infrastructure” and makes interference or destruction of telecom infrastructure a criminal offense.
The NCC is committed to working with security agencies to provide special protection to telecom infrastructure.
