The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has received assurances of stronger legislative backing from the House of Representatives Committee on Pensions following an oversight visit to the Directorate’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Led by its Chairman, Hon. Jallo Hussaini Mohammed, the Committee evaluated PTAD’s operations and assessed its budget performance for the 2024 fiscal year and the first half of 2025.
Welcoming the lawmakers, PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Tolulope Odunaiya, highlighted significant strides made in pension administration. She noted the successful implementation of the 20/28 per cent pension increment in September 2024, along with the full settlement of associated arrears.
She further explained that arrears payments related to the N32,000 pension increment, as well as the 10.66 per cent and 12.95 per cent increments, are ongoing. These, she said, are being funded through prudent management of pension sub-head balances remaining after monthly disbursements.
Dr. Odunaiya also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the inclusion of critical pension-related items in the 2026 budget proposal. These include:
Full implementation of the N32,000 pension increment,
Settlement of outstanding liabilities,
Introduction of a harmonisation policy and Provision of health insurance coverage for pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS)
She appealed to the Committee for continued legislative support to address lingering challenges faced by the Directorate in delivering on its mandate.
In his response, Hon. Jallo Mohammed commended PTAD for its commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners and pledged that the National Assembly would maintain its oversight role to ensure that retirees’ entitlements are protected.
He reiterated that the welfare of pensioners remains a national priority, emphasizing that the Committee would continue to work closely with PTAD to sustain and consolidate gains in the pension sector.
