Sultan, CAN Solicit Increased Funding To Fight Malaria.
Available statistics indicate that Nigeria accounts for the highest burden of malaria globally.
This is with an estimated 68 million cases, resulting in over 100,000 deaths annually.
Expressing worry over this development, the Inter Faith Action Association is soliciting for more funds to deal with the malaria endemic in Nigeria. Speaking at it’s 9th Board of Trustee meeting, in Abuja, the Executive Director of the Faith Group, Bishop Sunday Onuoha disclosed existing partnerships with donor agencies in the fight against malaria.
The cleric warned against lip service campaign in dealing with the endemic saying government across board must do the needful especially as it relates to budgetary allocation to the health sector.
Communique from the Board meeting attended by The sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, the president, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, and other eminent religious leaders commended the effort of the international community and external funders for the level of support through funding and capacity building for indigenous organisations.
They also urged government at all levels to give more attention to the health needs of the citizens, especially malaria, which poses one of the most common health challenges in Nigeria with a high mortality rate.
