Ododo’s Security Proclamation Not State Of Emergency — Kogi Govt
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has clarified that his recent Executive Proclamation on security protocols does not amount to a declaration of a state of emergency but rather a set of strategic measures aimed at strengthening the state’s security architecture and cracking down on criminal elements across Kogi State.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Ismaila Isah, who explained that the proclamation is a lawful constitutional action designed to improve security coordination and safeguard lives and property in the state.
Governor Ododo emphasized that the action falls within his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Security Officer of Kogi State, in line with Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
According to the Governor, the proclamation seeks to enhance collaboration among security agencies without suspending constitutional rights or invoking emergency rule. He noted that the measures include verification of security operatives, mandatory identification checks, and the prosecution of individuals found aiding or abetting criminal activities such as banditry and terrorism.
The Governor further explained that the initiative is intended to curb the activities of fake security personnel and reinforce the overall security framework of the state.
He warned that any individual or organization found supporting criminal activities would be treated as an enemy of the state and prosecuted in accordance with relevant laws. He added that all properties used in the commission of such crimes would be confiscated and forfeited to the Kogi State Government.
Governor Ododo stated that the measures are backed by constitutional provisions and the Kogi State Anti-Kidnapping, Robbery and Terrorism Law of 2016, which empowers the government to seize assets used in the perpetration of violent crimes anywhere in the state.
The Governor commended security agencies for their continued efforts and reassured residents of his administration’s unwavering commitment to peace and security.
Recall that Governor Ododo on Tuesday announced the new security protocols following the recovery of a large cache of weapons in the state by security agencies acting on credible intelligence.
