26

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to bolster transparency and public engagement regarding internal security and citizenship integrity.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NUJ leadership in Abuja, the Minister described his office as the “Ministry of the people,” noting that its mandate—ranging from border management to the protection of national assets—touches the lives of every Nigerian.

The Danger of Information Gaps

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that proactive communication is essential for democratic governance, warning that a lack of official clarity often leads to misinformation.

“Where facts are not made available, assumptions take their place,” the Minister stated, adding that government institutions must not operate in isolation if they hope to build public trust.

He characterized the relationship between the Ministry and the press as one anchored on accountability. While commending the media for its coverage of ongoing reforms, he acknowledged that constructive criticism is a necessary tool for policy refinement and institutional growth.

Structured Engagement and Reforms

In response to the Ministry’s initiatives, NUJ National President Alhassan Yahaya proposed the introduction of quarterly ministerial press briefings. This initiative aims to provide Nigerians with direct, regular updates on security reforms and departmental innovations.

The Union also extended an invitation to the Minister to address its upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to further sensitize stakeholders on the government’s policy direction.

Capacity Building for Security Reporting

Beyond communication, the NUJ sought a partnership focused on professional development. The Union proposed using its training institute to equip journalists with specialized skills in:

  • Security and defense reporting.
  • National interest considerations.
  • Responsible information dissemination.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing that sustained dialogue is the most effective way to promote national cohesion and ensure the public remains informed on matters of internal security.
