As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on citizens to move beyond ceremonial observances and embrace a renewed sense of patriotism, responsibility, and value-driven citizenship.

In his Independence Day message, NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, urged Nigerians to reflect on the true meaning of being a citizen drawing strength from the nation’s diversity, resilience, and collective aspirations for unity, peace, and progress.

“This milestone offers another opportunity for Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the core national values of discipline, integrity, self-reliance, and social justice,” Issa-Onilu stated. “The future of Nigeria depends not just on leaders in office, but on how every citizen upholds these values in everyday life.”

Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to revive the economy, the NOA chief encouraged Nigerians to see this year’s Independence Day as a call to action one that demands deeper commitment to nation building through civic responsibility, volunteerism, and active community engagement.

He emphasized that true patriotism is demonstrated not merely through symbolic acts, but in citizens’ daily conduct respecting national symbols, adhering to the rule of law, and upholding shared national values.

Issa-Onilu also called on schools, religious institutions, traditional rulers, and civil society organisations to initiate conversations around national identity, cultural heritage, and the role of active citizenship in sustaining democracy.

Reaffirming NOA’s commitment to promoting civic values and public awareness, he urged all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to proudly reaffirm their allegiance to the nation and contribute meaningfully to building a united and prosperous Nigeria.
