Nigeria, Egypt To Expand Military Cooperation, Target Aviation, Advanced Training
The Nigerian Army has signaled its intent to deepen military ties with Egypt, focusing on advanced professional training and the development of aviation capabilities to counter evolving security threats across the continent.
During a courtesy visit from Egyptian Defence Attaché Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim on Thursday, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, emphasized that the longstanding relationship between the two nations is a critical pillar for professional development within the force.
Expanding Training and Strategic Exchange
Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted that numerous Nigerian officers have already benefited from specialized programs in Egypt. He expressed a desire to expand these exchanges, specifically inviting the Egyptian Army to participate in programs at the Nigerian Army War College and the upcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration in July 2026.
”Sustained cooperation through advanced military courses and training exchanges remains critical to preparing personnel to effectively confront contemporary security challenges,” the COAS stated in a release signed by Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Apollonia Anele.
New Frontiers: Aviation and Technology
Beyond traditional infantry training, the COAS identified new areas for bilateral growth, including:
- Aviation Capabilities: Enhancing the Army’s air support and pilot proficiency.
- Operational Support Systems: Improving technological innovation and mission effectiveness.
- Strategic Linkages: Deepening ties between the institutional leadership of both armies.
Reviewing the 2024 MoU
Colonel Ibrahim confirmed that the visit served as a progress report on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two militaries in 2024. He noted that “significant progress” has been made, particularly in training cooperation.
The Egyptian Attaché reaffirmed Cairo’s commitment to intelligence sharing and advanced training to address the shared security challenges facing both nations. Preparations are currently underway for the next Military Committee Meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Cairo later this year to further solidify these operational goals.
