Nigeria-Cuba Reaffirm Bilateral Ties, Cuban VP Set To Visit Abuja

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, met with the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, on Tuesday to review bilateral relations and discuss a proposed high-level visit by Cuban leadership.

​During the meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, both officials reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, international law, and regional peace.

​Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

​Ambassador Morales Palmero expressed Cuba’s gratitude for Nigeria’s “longstanding solidarity,” particularly within international platforms. She briefed the Permanent Secretary on current socio-political developments in Latin America and underscored Cuba’s focus on:

  • ​Universal healthcare and free education
  • ​Social development and gender inclusion
  • ​Peaceful engagement and non-interference in domestic affairs

​Proposed Visit by Cuban Vice President

​A key highlight of the talks was the announcement of a proposed visit to Nigeria by the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa. The visit, scheduled to take place following the African Union Summit, is intended to serve as a follow-up to previous engagements and to bolster political and economic cooperation between the two nations.

​Nigeria’s Position on Global Issues

​Responding to the briefing, Ambassador Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its historical relationship with Cuba. He emphasized that Nigeria remains dedicated to the peaceful resolution of disputes and constructive engagement within the United Nations system.

​”Nigeria remains firmly committed to peace, security, and the principles of international law,” Ahmed stated, highlighting the importance of South-South cooperation in addressing global challenges related to development and human rights.

​The meeting concluded with both parties pledging to sustain collaboration on regional and global issues of common interest to benefit the citizens of both countries.
