Nigeria and Venezuela Celebrate 61 Years of Bilateral Ties

10

The Federal Government of Nigeria has marked the 61st anniversary of formal diplomatic relations with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, reaffirming a partnership built on energy cooperation and South-South solidarity.

In a press statement released Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa noted that the relationship, established on March 15, 1965, has evolved into a robust alliance spanning political dialogue, economic engagement, and cultural exchange.

Key Pillars of the Partnership

The two nations, though separated by the Atlantic Ocean, share significant strategic interests. As major energy producers and prominent members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Nigeria and Venezuela have historically collaborated on global market stability and resource-driven development.

Beyond the petroleum sector, the Ministry highlighted ongoing efforts to diversify bilateral cooperation into several key areas:

  • Trade and Economic Engagement
  • Aviation and Infrastructure
  • Education and Cultural Diplomacy
  • Sustainable Development and Energy Transition

Commitment to Sovereignty

The statement emphasized that the 61-year bond is anchored in shared historical experiences, specifically the struggle for national sovereignty and a mutual commitment to equitable global development.

”Nigeria and Venezuela have consistently demonstrated mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty and have strengthened ties through diplomatic engagement and bilateral consultations,” the Ministry stated.

Looking toward the future, the Federal Government expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow, particularly in areas supporting global peace and the transition to sustainable energy. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening these “enduring bonds” for the benefit of citizens in both countries.
