NAFDAC Enforces Nationwide Ban On Sachet And Small-Bottle Alcoholic Drinks Jan,2026.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a nationwide ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles below 200 millilitres, effective January 1, 2026.
The agency stated that December 2025 will serve as the final deadline for the production and sale of such products before the enforcement of the ban.
According to a statement signed by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency will not grant any further extensions and has urged all manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply fully with the directive.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that the ban, which is backed by the Nigerian Senate and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, aims to protect children, teenagers, and young adults from the harmful effects of alcohol abuse.
She expressed concern that the availability of cheap, portable, and easily concealable alcoholic drinks had contributed to a rise in cases of addiction, road accidents, domestic violence, and other social problems.
“This ban is protective, not punitive,” she said. “The health of our nation especially our children is more important than short-term economic gain.”
The NAFDAC DG explained that the move aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol, adding that the policy reflects a shared national responsibility to safeguard public health and promote a safer society.
“The decision is grounded in science, public health, and national interest,” she added. “Protecting our children and preserving the stability of our future workforce is not just NAFDAC’s duty it is the responsibility of every Nigerian.”
With the enforcement deadline approaching, NAFDAC reiterated its resolve to work closely with industry stakeholders, health advocates, and law enforcement agencies to ensure smooth implementation and compliance.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to building a healthier, safer environment for all Nigerians.
