The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) is collaborating with organizers of the 2024 Abuja International carnival with the theme “Carnival of renewed Hope; A pledge to my country” in order to raise awareness about HIV as well as ensure that more Nigerians are tested to know their status.
The carnival which commenced on November 21st, 2024 features diverse activities including street shows, musical concerts, boat regattas to mention a few, with participants from within and outside Nigeria.
Throwing more light on the collaboration, Director General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori in an interview with newsmen at the sideline of the carnival said it is a deliberate move to take the HIV campaign outside the health facilities.
She said the idea is to ensure that people are tested to know their status as well as counseled to live positively. The NACA D.G., while reiterating the commitment of the agency to reduce the trend of new infections in the country, further highlighted the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of people living with HIV.
The campaign as expected was not the usual HIV related activity NACA is known for as the agency also collaborated with other health workers in the screening of persons with visual impairments and free distribution of eyeglasses.
