Military Intensifies Nationwide Surveillance Ahead of Yuletide Festivities
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the implementation of a nationwide security strategy featuring the deployment of special forces and aerial surveillance to ensure a peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration across Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the military high command confirmed that proactive measures have been “emplaced” to prevent potential attacks during the festive period.
According to the DHQ, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) are working in close coordination with other security agencies to intensify operations in identified vulnerable areas.
The strategy includes the deployment of additional troops to strategic locations and major transit routes.
”Special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to ensure rapid response capability,” the statement read, adding that aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering have been heightened to track the movement and communication of suspected criminal groups.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has further directed Unit Commanders to strengthen patrols and establish fortified checkpoints. Commanders were also instructed to maintain active collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups, and state security formations to ensure a seamless security blanket.
While reaffirming the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property, the DHQ urged Nigerians to remain vigilant. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security post, with the military promising that all reports will be treated with “urgency and confidentiality.”
General Oluyede concluded the dispatch by wishing the nation a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance.
