626

Against the prevailing security concerns in the country, the Federal government has been urged to take more drastic measures to cut the supply chain of arms and weapons, hard drugs as well as narcotics. From the activities of unknown gun men to terrorism, banditry, religious and ethnic violence and killer herders available reports quoted by the King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Centre for Interreligous and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID) indicates that over 6,000 people have been killed across the country with several houses, businesses, government facilities and religious places of worship worth billions of naira destroyed resulting to about 210,000 internally displaced persons in 2021. The implication of this challenge KAICIID says has further divided the once peaceful and United Nigeria leading to severe economic complications. At a one-day round table on Insecurity in Nigeria and the way forward, President of KAICIID Dr Auwal Farouk advocated reasons why the authorities should do more in advocacy on the dangers posed by these challenges. The conference further came up with recommendations for government and relevant stakeholders like religious institutions targeted at changing the narrative. KAICIID is an intergovernmental organization governed by religious representatives and dedicated to the facilitation of dialogue between different cultures and faiths. Its mandate allows the Centre to bridge the gap between religious leaders and policymakers in order to advocate for peace and combat violent extremism.
