The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receiving 110 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at the second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives held in Abuja.
He assured that the Commission is diligently processing the applications in accordance with the procedures set out in the Constitution and relevant electoral regulations.
Professor Yakubu who also dispel speculations suggesting that INEC is opposed to the registration of new political parties, assured that all applications will be treated fairly and objectively, regardless of the status or affiliations of their promoters.
In his remarks, the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, reaffirmed the vital role of the media in the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections.
Other highlights of the meeting includes announcement for the conduct of bye-elections and resumption of Continuous Voter Registration with full details of both exercises to be made public within the next 24 hours.
