INEC Officially Opens Campaigns for FCT Area Council Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the start of campaigns by political parties for the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
In a statement released by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the decision aligns with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for participating political parties.
Political parties are permitted to commence public electioneering campaigns from Wednesday, September 24, 2025, with campaigns set to conclude at midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
Olumekun reminded all parties, candidates, and supporters of the legal provisions governing the conduct of campaigns. “As enshrined in Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022, it is unlawful to use abusive language, engage in physical attacks on opponents during rallies, processions, and meetings, or destroy campaign materials,” he emphasized.
He also stressed the importance of equal access, noting, “All parties and candidates must be granted unimpeded access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, as well as public rallies and meetings.”
Furthermore, Olumekun highlighted that Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022 forbids the misuse of incumbency to benefit or disadvantage any party or candidate.
The FCT Area Council elections are scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
