IGP Warns Men, Officers Against Extortion, Harassment of Highway Commuters

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has the IGP has directed all supervising officers to undertake stringent supervision of their subordinates in the field with the primary objective of curbing and eradicating the unprofessional conducts relating to extortion.

The IGP expressed his displeasure in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP, Olumuyiwa Adejobi and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA said the police chief took cognizance of the complaints which was recently addressed by the National Assembly relate to unprofessional conducts of some police personnel.

According to the statement, the authority is looking into the alleged incidences which include extortion, intimidation, and harassment of commuters on the highways as anyone found culpable will face the full wrath of the law.

The Police boss noted that it is imperative that supervising officers take proactive measures to prevent any form of misconduct, and where such misconduct is observed, they are expected to take immediate action to rectify the situation.

He however, reiterated that the Force has initiated comprehensive training and retraining programmes focused on cultivating a culture of civility and professionalism to stimulate behavioural and attitudinal changes among personnel.

The IGP further directed the Monitoring Unit and other Disciplinary Units to intensify their efforts in identifying and apprehending officers engaged in acts of misconduct.

He emphasised that any personnel found guilty of the offenses would be severely punished to serve as deterrence to others adding that supervisory officers who fail to fulfill their duty of oversight will also face appropriate sanctions.

The Police Chief further urged members of the public to report any instance of misconduct for strict measures to be taken to ensure that the actions of a few do not undermine the reputation of the entire Force.
