A coalition of media and civil society groups has protested against the continued detention of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the foundation for investigative Journalism.

Ojukwu was arrested by the Police over his report on alleged financial mismanagement of over N147 million ($104,600) involving a senior government official.

Expressing their reservation over the development, the coalition staged a protest at the Police headquarters in Abuja brandishing placards indicating a surge in attacks against press freedom.

Spokesperson of the coalition, Bukky Shonibare, who addressed journalists called on the Inspector General of Police to file charges against Ojukwu or release him unconditionally.

For the Country Representative, Accountability Lab, Friday Odey, the protest became necessary to get the authorities to respect the rights of Nigerians.

Receiving the protest letter on behalf of the Police high command, the commissioner of Police in charge of Federal Operations, assured that their demands would be channeled to the appropriate office.

Recall that Ojukwu was arrested in Lagos on May 1st, 2024 by the police, and later transferred to Abuja over alleged violation of the Cybercrime Act.
