The Kogi State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved a draft budget estimate of ₦820.49 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.

The proposal, tagged “Budget of Shared Prosperity: Driving Sustainable Growth for All,” represents an increase of ₦215.96 billiona 35.7 percent rise—over the revised ₦604.53 billion budget for 2025.

Governor Ododo, who chaired the Executive Council meeting where the draft budget was presented, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, economic expansion, and improved service delivery across all sectors.

Presenting the proposal before the council, the Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, said the 2026 draft budget is anchored on key fiscal and economic strategies designed to strengthen the state’s revenue base, consolidate ongoing reforms, and drive sustainable growth.

According to him, the budget projects ₦470.01 billion in recurrent revenue and ₦350.48 billion in capital receipts. On the expenditure side, ₦360.67 billion is allocated for recurrent expenditure, while ₦459.82 billion is proposed for capital expenditure, balancing the total outlay at ₦820.49 billion.

Idris explained that the recurrent component covers personnel costs, overheads, subventions, and debt servicing obligations of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The capital expenditure, he added, targets the completion of ongoing projects and the initiation of new interventions in infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, and social welfare.

He further disclosed that the 2026 fiscal plan emphasizes enhanced Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), promotion of public-private partnerships (PPP), improved debt recovery mechanisms, and reforms aimed at boosting the ease of doing business in the state.

The commissioner noted that the budget also seeks to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal by prioritizing social protection programmes, rural development, support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and the promotion of alternative energy solutions such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Idris stated that the draft budget was developed through an inclusive and participatory process involving stakeholder engagements, town hall meetings, and technical sessions with MDAs to ensure that citizens’ needs and priorities are adequately reflected.

He assured that Governor Ododo’s administration remains committed to maintaining fiscal discipline, transparency, and accountability in budget implementation, adding that the 2026 fiscal plan is strategically designed to consolidate the gains of 2025 and deliver shared prosperity to the people of Kogi State.

The 2026 draft budget estimates are expected to be presented to the Kogi State House of Assembly by Governor Ododo for consideration and approval in the coming weeks.
