FRSC: SGF Commissions Electric Motorbikes To Boost National Security and Traffic Enforcement
In a strategic move to modernize road safety and bolster Nigeria’s national security framework, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, officially commissioned a new fleet of electric motorbikes for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
Speaking at the Corps Headquarters in Abuja, the SGF described the deployment as a “game-changer” in proactive traffic management. He noted that the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to strengthening security operations and improving road safety management across the country.
In a statement signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC highlighted that the motorbikes are intended to serve a dual purpose: enhancing traditional traffic enforcement and providing vital intelligence support to combat crime along road corridors.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, characterized the intervention as both timely and strategic.
He explained that the electric bikes would be immediately deployed to critical corridors nationwide, particularly in areas where standard patrol vehicles face accessibility challenges.
”The increased mobility, speed, and visibility offered by these bikes will significantly improve traffic flow and rapid response to road traffic crashes,” Mohammed stated. He added that the bikes would be instrumental in managing highway decongestion during the festive and peak travel seasons.
Beyond traffic control, the Corps Marshal emphasized the FRSC’s evolving role in the national security architecture. He noted that FRSC operatives frequently provide early warning intelligence and crime detection to sister security agencies.
The new fleet is expected to strengthen this inter-agency collaboration by allowing for swifter movement and communication.
The transition to electric vehicles also marks a shift toward sustainable mobility within Nigerian law enforcement. Officials stated that the adoption of electric technology aligns with global best practices, aiming to enhance operational efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of the Corps’ patrol activities.
The commissioning concludes a series of recent upgrades aimed at positioning the FRSC as a technology-driven agency capable of navigating a rapidly evolving security and transportation landscape.
