FRSC Blends Enforcement with Welfare to Reduce Holiday Crashes
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has received widespread commendation from motorists following the launch of its “Free Water Campaign,” a strategic welfare initiative aimed at reducing road traffic crashes during the festive season.
In a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the agency noted that the initiative has brought significant relief to travelers across Nigeria’s major highway corridors.
Introduced by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the campaign involves FRSC operatives distributing bottled water to drivers and passengers.
The initiative is designed to tackle the physical toll of long-distance travel, specifically targeting fatigue, dehydration, and heat stress factors often cited as underlying causes of festive-season accidents.
“Road safety goes beyond enforcement; it is about caring for the people we serve.
“A refreshed and alert driver is a safer driver. If offering something as simple as water can help save lives on our roads, then it is a responsibility we must embrace,” Corps Marshal Mohammed stated.
The campaign marks a departure from traditional “enforcement-only” methods. By prioritizing the wellness of road users, the FRSC is leveraging human care as a tool for crash prevention.
Motorists on high-traffic routes have described the gesture as “unprecedented” and “thoughtful,” noting that it has helped de-escalate the tension often felt between drivers and law enforcement during the holidays.
The water distribution points have also served as mobile education hubs. While providing refreshment, FRSC personnel have used the opportunity to sensitize motorists on critical safety issues, including the dangers of overloading and excessive speeding.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a visible presence on the highways throughout the remainder of the festive period.
While the agency continues to regulate traffic, its leadership emphasizes that the primary goal remains the protection of lives through proactive, people-centered operations.
The Corps however, urges motorists to remain patient, law-abiding, and alert to ensure a safer Nigeria for all.
