ECOWAS Orders Niger Military Junta To Restore Constitutional Orde Or

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff have urged the Military Junta in Niger to give peace a chance and immediately restore constitutional order in the country by restoring the detained democratically elected president, Mohammed Bazoum.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Extraordinary meeting of the ECOWAS Defence Chiefs on the political situation in Niger Republic at the Defence headquarters in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah stated that other measures including military intervention will be explored if peace is not restored in Niger Republic.

He further assured that ECOWAS is determined to put an end to the trends of military coup and ensure that constitutional order is nolonger kdisrupted again in the sub region.

In his remarks,the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Kana assured of Nigeria’s support in ensuring that democracy is restored in Niger.

Earlier, the chief of Defence State and President of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa spoke on need for the Defence Chiefs to intensify diplomatic efforts in resolving the crisis in Niger Republic as well as strengthen it’s coordination for the betterment of the ECOWAS region.

Highpoint of the event was the official handing over of the mantle of leadership from the former President of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff from Guinea Bissau to the newly elected president and Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa.
