Defence Minister Resigns On Health Grounds
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Abubakar tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, citing health reasons.
President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Abubakar’s service to the nation. The President is expected to formally notify the Senate of a new ministerial nominee later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes as President Tinubu declares a national security emergency, with further details on its scope expected to be announced soon.
