CDS Pledges Military Support for Benue Peace Initiatives
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to restoring long-term peace and stability in Benue State.
The assurance was given during a courtesy visit by Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Strengthening Security Partnerships
Governor Alia congratulated General Oluyede on his appointment and commended the military’s role in the recent security improvements across the state. He noted that the AFN’s presence has reassured residents and created a pathway for lasting peace.
The Governor expressed the state government’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the Defence Headquarters, specifically seeking support for a state-led initiative to disarm non-state actors. He highlighted the Sankera axis—comprising Katsina-Ala, Zaki Biam, and Logo Local Government Areas—as a primary focus for these disarmament efforts.
Strategic Coordination and Non-Kinetic Solutions
In response, General Oluyede attributed the progress in Benue to the “enhanced synergy” between security agencies, traditional rulers, and the state government. To sustain these gains, the CDS announced plans to:
- Establish a structured interface mechanism: A formal system to improve coordination between the AFN and local stakeholders.
- Prioritize non-kinetic approaches: Implementing rehabilitation and livelihood support programs for reintegrated individuals.
- Expand security operations: Consolidating current gains to ensure normalcy returns to all affected communities.
