Amupitan Warns Against Actions That Could Undermine Credible Elections.
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has warned that anyone involved in acts capable of undermining credible elections will face consequences.
Professor Amupitan gave the warning during a regular consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Assessing the recently conducted FCT Area Council election, the INEC Chairman expressed concern that only 45 percent of polling units opened by 8:30 a.m., describing the situation as below the Commission’s expected standard.
However, Professor Amupitan commended the overall conduct of the election. He particularly praised the peaceful exercise in Kano and Rivers State constituencies, which recorded zero violence.
On the timetable earlier released for the 2027 General Election, the INEC Chairman told the Resident Electoral Commissioners that the Commission may review the schedule, especially with the introduction of a new electoral law.
The meeting was also attended by a delegation from the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions, led by its National Chairman, Mamman Nda Eri.
Earlier, the oath of allegiance was administered to the newly reappointed Resident Electoral Commissioner for Abia State, Dr. Chukwu Chukwuemeka, who was recently reappointed for a second term by President Bola Tinubu.
