Amupitan Assumes Office As New INEC Chairman, Pledges Credible Elections.
The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, on Thursday formally assumed office at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, following his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House.
Amupitan succeeded Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who had served as Acting Chairman since the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
In his inaugural address to National Commissioners and Directors, Amupitan described his appointment as a “divine assignment” and pledged to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in managing Nigeria’s electoral process.
He emphasized teamwork, accountability, and staff welfare, saying the Commission’s success depends on unity and professionalism.
“Our mandate is to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people. The integrity of our elections is not negotiable,” he said.
The new INEC boss assured that his leadership would focus on staff motivation and restoring public confidence in the electoral system ahead of the Anambra Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025, which he described as a key test of the Commission’s readiness.
Amupitan commended Agbamuche-Mbu for her stewardship and thanked INEC staff for their commitment.
Earlier, Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the new Chairman and noted that four National Commissioners were currently in Anambra for a readiness assessment visit, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to credible polls.
