The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that over 3.8 million Nigerians have registered in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, just three weeks after its commencement.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
According to the data, as of Sunday, September 7, 2025, a total of 3,544,850 citizens had completed the online pre-registration, which began on August 18. Of this figure, 1,709,933 (48.24%) are male, while 1,834,917 (51.76%) are female.
Youths continue to dominate the process, with 2,291,809 (64.65%) of online registrants aged between 18 and 34. Students also formed a significant portion, totaling 882,441 (24.89%).
On the in-person registration front, which began on August 25, INEC reported that 288,614 Nigerians had completed their registration as of September 4. Among them, 132,634 (45.96%) are male and 155,980 (54.04%) are female. Youths again led the way, making up 215,414 (74.64%) of in-person registrants, with 114,150 (39.55%) identified as students.
Olumekun noted that a comprehensive breakdown of the registration figures by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status is now available on the Commission’s website.
INEC also praised the efforts of citizens and civic groups in encouraging participation, while issuing a stern reminder: only Nigerians aged 18 and above are eligible to register.
The Commission condemned reported attempts to register underage individuals “in anticipation of turning 18 before the 2027 general elections,” warning that such actions are illegal and will not be tolerated.
The CVR exercise is ongoing nationwide, both online and at designated registration centres.
