The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to roll out a new General Multipurpose Identity Card (GMPC) by October 2025.
Speaking during a two-day roundtable with online publishers in Abuja, NIMC’s Director of Strategy and Programming, Dr. Ivan Ikoku, reaffirmed the central role of the National Identification Number (NIN) in the nation’s identity framework, clarifying that the NIN has not been suspended at any point.
Dr. Ikoku explained that the upcoming GMPC will act as an additional identity token designed to boost access to public services, financial inclusion, and targeted government programs.
While specific features of the new card remain under wraps until its official launch, Dr. Ikoku revealed that the GMPC will include digital functionalities such as a wallet system for government subsidies.
To ensure nationwide awareness and understanding, NIMC has committed to launching a robust media campaign ahead of the October 2025 rollout.
