Nigeria-Türkiye Eye Expanded Strategic Partnership – Amb. Tuggar

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, held high-level diplomatic talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara on Monday.

According to a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA News, the meeting serves as a strategic precursor to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s upcoming State visit to Türkiye.

The discussions, marking Tuggar’s first official visit to the country, centered on deepening bilateral cooperation across four primary pillars: politics, economy, security, and multilateralism.

Focus on Economic and Infrastructure Growth

During the session, Minister Tuggar emphasized the need to expand bilateral trade and attract Turkish investment into Nigeria’s core sectors. Key areas identified for partnership include:

  • Infrastructure and Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Energy Development

Both ministers noted the steady upward trajectory of economic relations but stressed that structured public-private engagements are essential to unlocking the full potential of both nations.

Regional Leadership and Security

Minister Fidan praised Nigeria’s leadership within West Africa and its role in regional and continental frameworks. He commended Nigeria’s efforts in maintaining regional stability and prosperity.

On the security front, the two leaders explored avenues to deepen collaboration in military affairs and the defense industry, signaling a shift toward a more robust security partnership.

A Growing Strategic Partnership

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to national sovereignty and pragmatic cooperation. Officials from both sides described the relationship as increasingly strategic, expressing confidence that the talks have set a firm foundation for deeper engagement in the coming years.
