The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has attributed the Quality of Service (QoS) challenges currently being experienced in Abuja to disruptions in diesel supply to MTN base stations in the affected areas, which have negatively impacted the quality of experience of telecommunications subscribers.
In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, the Commission disclosed that it is working closely with major stakeholders and licensees to address the situation. The challenges, according to the NCC, are largely due to disruptions in diesel supply affecting IHS Nigeria Limited, the colocation service provider responsible for powering Airtel and MTN base stations in the affected locations.
The NCC explained that the disruptions stem from the activities of the National Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA), which led to interruptions in diesel supply to telecom sites, resulting in service outages across parts of Abuja. The Commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring seamless communication services for all Nigerians, noting that reliable power supply remains critical to the delivery of optimal telecommunications services.
The Commission said it is actively engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve the diesel supply challenges and explore sustainable solutions. It urged all parties to collaborate in swiftly removing the supply bottlenecks affecting critical telecommunications infrastructure, particularly those arising from NOGASA’s actions.
Reaffirming its regulatory commitment, the NCC stated that it is taking proactive steps to facilitate dialogue between affected service providers and other stakeholders to promptly resolve the diesel supply concerns that have adversely impacted service quality.
