In a strategic move to bolster national security and enhance the welfare of retired personnel, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has inaugurated an 18-member committee tasked with reclaiming ungoverned spaces for economic viability and repositioning the Nigerian Legion.
The inauguration took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Ship House, Abuja. The initiative aims to integrate military veterans into the national security framework while ensuring they lead dignified, productive lives after service.
Strategic Shift in Security
Representing the Minister, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, described the Nigerian Legion as a critical institution built on sacrifice and patriotism. He emphasized that the current socio-economic landscape demands a reform of the Corps to ensure long-term sustainability and relevance.
Gen. Musa advocated for a transition from a purely offensive military strategy to a more comprehensive approach. He noted that while kinetic operations are essential, lasting peace requires addressing the underlying socio-economic factors that allow insecurity to thrive.
Terms of Reference
The Minister outlined three primary mandates for the newly formed committee:
- Economic Integration: Repositioning the veteran community to actively support national economic development.
- Securing Ungoverned Spaces: Deploying veterans to provide effective oversight and development in areas currently lacking government presence.
- Operational Reform: Strengthening the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires to improve reintegration efforts and operational effectiveness.
- The Ministry’s Joint Services Department.
- The Nigerian Legion.
- Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
- The Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
- The Offices of the Honourable Minister of Defence and the Minister of State for Defence.
