A group of lawyers under the aegis of “Save Benue and Zamfara Coalition” have petitioned the National Assembly to take over the functions of the Benue and Zamfara state houses of Assembly.
The lawyers numbering over one thousand staged a peaceful protest at the National Assembly complex.
Speaking through their spokesperson, Barrister, Sambari Benjamin, they alleged that the Zamfara and Benue Houses of Assembly are no longer able to perform their constitutional duties due to internal crises and interference by the governors of both states.
The lawyers further urged the National Assembly to invoke Section 11(4) of the Constitution, which allows the parliament to make laws for peace and good governance of a state when the House of Assembly is unable to perform its functions.
The group expressed fears that Benue and Zamfara States are on the way to coming under emergency rule unless urgent constitutional steps are taken to remedy the anomalies that exist in both states.
