The Kogi State Government has commenced the distribution of fertilizer to support over 30,000 farmers across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Timothy Ojomah, disclosed this during an interaction with the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Ismaila Isah.
According to him, the fertilizers—valued at ₦3.2 billion—are part of efforts to boost productivity across key crop value chains including rice, maize, and cassava, under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s agricultural development agenda.
He explained that the beneficiaries were carefully selected through an enumeration and verification exercise conducted in 2024, which identified genuine farmers via their commodity associations and other relevant stakeholders across the state.
Hon. Ojomah also emphasized that the distribution includes a strong capacity-building component to ensure the proper use of the soluble fertilizers. He noted that the state has invested in training and retraining farmers, as well as deploying extension workers who are currently providing technical support and monitoring fertilizer applications in farming communities.
The Commissioner highlighted that the training, held earlier in the year, brought together members of various commodity associations, who are expected to pass on the knowledge to other farmers within their clusters using a train-the-trainer model.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to agricultural development and food security, stressing that Governor Ododo remains focused on empowering farmers with both modern inputs and practical knowledge to promote productivity and sustainable growth in the sector.
