The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports circulating in the media alleging a purported resolution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) and the postponement of the Ekiti State Congress/Governorship Primary, said to have been issued and signed by the Secretary to the Commission.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, reaffirmed that the document did not originate from the office of the Secretary to the Commission or from any official INEC channel.
According to her, preliminary findings suggest that the signature of the Secretary to the Commission was forged by “unscrupulous elements.”
INEC therefore urged the public, political parties, and the media to completely disregard the fake correspondence.
The Commission described the act of forgery and circulation of false documents as a serious electoral offence and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. It cautioned individuals engaging in such “futile, criminal, and disruptive activities” to desist in the interest of electoral integrity and national peace.
Mrs. Eta-Messi added that INEC is working with security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
