Ibadan Expressway: One-Way Driver Jailed For Two Months

A Volkswagen bus driver, Koko Moses, has been sentenced to two months in prison without the option of a fine for driving against the flow of traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The conviction was handed down by the Ojodu-Abiodun Magisterial District Court following a joint enforcement operation aimed at curbing reckless driving along the Kara–Opic axis. The area has seen a surge in traffic violations due to ongoing bridge expansion joint construction.

The Enforcement Operation

The Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, initiated the special intervention patrol in response to rising safety risks. The operation was a collaborative effort involving:

  • The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos and Ogun Sector Commands.
  • The Nigeria Police Force (Warewa, Ojodu-Abiodun, and Isheri Divisions).
  • The Nigerian Army and TRACE.

During the patrol, officers intercepted Mr. Moses, who was driving a bus with registration number MUS 89 YG against traffic. Upon his arrest, authorities discovered he was also operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

The Verdict

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Warewa Station, CSP Ayegbede John, charged the offender to court immediately. The presiding magistrate found him guilty of the infractions and ordered his imprisonment to serve as a deterrent to other motorists.

The FRSC noted that the joint patrol led to an immediate reduction in “one-way” driving incidents along the corridor.

Zero Tolerance for Impunity

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC commended the inter-agency cooperation, reiterating the agency’s “zero tolerance” policy for traffic violations.

”The FRSC will continue to maintain sustained enforcement operations along critical corridors nationwide,” the Corps Marshal stated, urging the public to prioritize safety and cooperate with traffic management during construction periods.
