The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven people died in a road traffic crash in Kano State on Sunday, debunking earlier media reports that placed the death toll at 30.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:33 AM on February 8, 2026, along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja, Gezawa Local Government Area. The incident involved a commercial DAF trailer, registered as KTG467YG, which was transporting 105 passengers at the time of the crash.
Casualty Breakdown and Rescue Efforts
According to an official statement signed by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC established the following figures through on-the-spot assessments:
- Fatalities: 7 adult males.
- Injuries: 70 victims (55 male adults and 15 male children) sustained various degrees of injury.
- Unharmed: 30 passengers were rescued without injuries.
The injured victims were evacuated by FRSC emergency teams for medical attention, while the Corps emphasized that these verified figures should serve as the definitive account of the tragedy to avoid “undue public anxiety.”
Cause of the Incident
Preliminary investigations by the Corps attribute the crash to Speed Violation (SPV), which resulted in a Loss of Control (LOC).
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, reacted to the crash by labeling speeding as one of the deadliest traffic violations. He noted that exceeding speed limits significantly compromises a driver’s ability to react and reduces the chances of survival during an impact.
”Vehicles driven at excessive speed become lethal weapons capable of wiping out entire families in seconds,” Mohammed stated, warning that the FRSC would intensify nationwide enforcement to prosecute those flouting speed regulations.
FRSC Safety Advisory
The Corps concluded its report by urging commercial drivers to prioritize safety over haste. The agency reminded road users that speed limits are protective measures designed to prevent the “burden” of losing loved ones to avoidable accidents.
