President Muhammadu Buhari on July 7th 2019 signed an agreement establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfcFTA). The AfcFTA is a long awaited African response to historical exigencies confronting continent and indeed the black race over the centuries. The initiative comprised of one unified market of 1.5 billion consumers with a combined gross domestic product of 300 billion US dollars is expected to be the largest free trade area in the world. As expected, Nigeria with a population of over 200 million is indeed a prospective target in the AfcFTA, a development that may not be unconnected to fears that the nation may be a dumbing ground for goods produced outside the coverage area of the agreement. This development no doubt may have prempted the 2 day effective management and competency based leadership training on Nigeria’s engagement in the AfcFTA organised by the federal ministry of Industry,Trade and Investment in conjunction with the Nigeria Entrepreneurs Forum in Abuja. Some of the hurdles Nigeria might likely face in her engagement in the free trade area initiative and likely prospects were highlighted by various speakers at the conference. The Participants on their part were exposed to vital information that will enhance their participation at the AfcFTA,which is likely to commence in January 1st, 2021.
