The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially expressed its “profound sadness” and extended condolences to the Swiss Confederation following a devastating fire that claimed dozens of lives at an exclusive ski resort on New Year’s Day.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa conveyed the sympathies of the Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to the government and people of Switzerland.
The tragedy occurred at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a high-end locale in the Swiss Alps, during the early hours of January 1.
Reports indicate the blaze erupted while the venue was packed with revelers celebrating the new year, resulting in approximately 40 fatalities and over 100 injuries.
”On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar conveys heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Switzerland,” the statement read.
“Nigeria also wishes those injured a speedy and full recovery.”
The Ministry noted that the thoughts and prayers of the Nigerian people remain with the victims’ families during this period of national mourning.
Swiss authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which preliminary witness accounts suggest may have been ignited by celebratory sparklers.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin has since declared five days of national mourning as the task of identifying the victims many of whom are young tourists continues.
