The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to embark on an awareness campaign on drug abuse and mental health in Monrovia, Liberia, from August 4 to 8, 2025.
This initiative is part of the Parliament’s ongoing efforts to address the growing challenges posed by substance abuse and mental health disorders in West Africa.
The ECOWAS Parliament has previously conducted similar awareness campaigns in Conakry, Guinea, and Freetown, Sierra Leone, in June 2025.
These campaigns have provided a platform for stakeholders to engage with national authorities, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations to discuss the pressing issues of substance abuse and mental health.
The upcoming campaign in Monrovia aims to alert stakeholders about the escalating challenges posed by substance abuse and mental health disorders in West Africa, foster a collaborative effort to combat it as well as engage with national stakeholders, including ministerial representatives, healthcare professionals, youth in recovery, civil society organizations, and local authorities.
During the campaign, the ECOWAS Parliament delegation will conduct field visits to specialized treatment centers to gain insights into the challenges faced by those affected by substance abuse and mental health disorders.
The delegation will also meet with national stakeholders to discuss potential solutions and strategies to address these issues.
The awareness campaign aligns with ECOWAS’s broader goals of promoting people-centred regional governance and protecting vulnerable populations.
By working together, the ECOWAS Parliament and national stakeholders can develop effective strategies to combat substance abuse and mental health disorders in West Africa.
The campaign is expected to contribute significantly to raising awareness and promoting regional cooperation to address the pressing issues of substance abuse and mental health disorders in West Africa through engagement with national stakeholders and by conducting field visits.
The Parliament also aims to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by West African countries and to identify potential solutions to the issues.
