| As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament prepares for its 2022 First Extraordinary Session in Lome, Republic of Togo, the Speaker, Sidie Mohammed Tunis is optimistic that the election of Members by Direct Universal Suffrage which remains the cardinal objective of the current Legislature would lead to a more formidable and stronger Parliament.
“We would continue to work for its realisation, especially considering the enormous support we appear to be receiving from major stakeholders. This support and encouragement provide us a great light of hope” he said.
He also pointed out that the ECOWAS Commission’s Vision 2050 document is very central to the future of the region.
“Its proper implementation would go a long way in determining the peace, security, stability and socio-economic development of the region in the next 30years” he said.
The Speaker noted that 2022 will be a great test for the parliament as Covid-19 pandemic has continue to remain a global challenge especially with the new variant called OMICRON.
“I urge everyone to stay strong, steadfast and faithful to the fight against Covid-19. We must ensure we get vaccinated, and keep all the protocols to mitigate the spread of the deadly virus. We have weathered through similar phases in the past and will continue to win” he said.
