The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered an immediate investigation into a violent mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command following a fatal road accident on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The incident was triggered by a collision between two trucks along the Benin–Lagos Expressway. While FRSC personnel were conducting rescue operations at the scene, one of the truck drivers was confirmed dead, and several FRSC officers sustained critical injuries.
In a tragic turn of events, one of the injured officers later died in the hospital. Following the crash, an angry mob besieged the Unit Command office, vandalizing the facility and attacking personnel. The situation was eventually contained by the swift intervention of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force.
Corps Marshal’s Response
In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal condemned the violence, describing the attack on officers performing their lawful duties as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable.”
”FRSC operatives were on lawful duty to save lives when the tragic crash occurred,” Mohammed stated.
Investigation and Accountability
The Corps Marshal has mandated a comprehensive probe to determine the “immediate and remote causes” of both the initial road crash and the subsequent mob action. He assured the public that those responsible for the vandalism and assault would face legal consequences.
While commiserating with the families of the deceased driver and the fallen officer, the FRSC leadership urged the public to remain calm and supportive of road safety activities. The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safer roads across Nigeria despite the tragedy.
