President Bola Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot and statesman whose legacy will stand the test of time.
In a personal message released shortly after news of Buhari’s passing broke on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Tinubu said he received the announcement “with profound sorrow and a heavy heart.”
“I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor, who departed this life today at a hospital in the United Kingdom, with a heavy heart,” the President wrote.
Reflecting on Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, Tinubu praised the late leader’s enduring commitment to the country—both as a military Head of State (1984–1985) and as a democratically elected President (2015–2023).
“Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life,” Tinubu noted. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
He further lauded Buhari for his fight against corruption, insistence on discipline in public service, and his consistent prioritization of national interest over personal gain.
“In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him,” Tinubu said.
He also extended condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, especially the Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.
To honour the former president, Tinubu announced that all national flags will fly at half-staff for seven days, starting Sunday. He also disclosed that an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) session will be convened on Tuesday in Buhari’s honour.
“The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” Tinubu said.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. May his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
