Breaking: Senate Orders NHIS Boss To Go After Indebted HMOs, Set To Sanction Deviants

The Nigerian Senate at its plenary has called on Health Maintenance Organisations, HMOs still indebted to the National Health Insurance Scheme to clear up their debt within ninety days or face the full wrath of the law. The National Health Insurance Scheme is a creation of NHIS Act 35 of 1999 and amended in 2004 with the mandate to ensure that Nigerians have access to quality and affordable healthcare services. Since its establishment, the agency has been engulf in series of crisis including multi billion naira alleged corruption that led to the suspension and eventual removal of its Executive Secretary. Sponsored a motion to make the NHIS work for Nigerians, Senator representing Kwara Central, Oloriegbe Ibrahim said despite report of the HMOs being barred from operating, they are still providing services illegally. He also called for a thorough investigation into the activities of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
